Title

The application of Persistent Identifiers as one approach to ensure long-term referencing of Online-Theses

Description

The use of URLs to meet the challenges of permanent referencing of digital resources is not sufficient. Reasons are: The instability of URLs and the lack of guarantee for durable access to the resources itself. Furthermore, if the access to a certain publication is unavailably URLs not provide an appropriate mechanism to redirect a user request to an identical copy of desired publication. In consequence of the deficits of URLs a identification system for digital objects must be applied that is able to comply with requirements as the unique resource identification and the guarantee of permanent access to digital resources. The application of Persistent Identifiers (PI) e.g. Uniform Resource Names (URN) or Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) for digital resources provide an appropriate solution. This presentation focused the discussion of implementation strategies of PIs on the basis of theoretical and practical considerations. In this context the PI-related activities of Die Deutsche Bibliothek, the German National Library, will be introduced and experiences concerning the PI-Management at Die Deutsche Bibliothek will be presented.
