Title

Rethinking the Dissertation in the Digital World

Description

Will digital dissertations change the way dissertations are written? If so, how? Will digital dissertations change the role of dissertations in academic research? Should academic institutions rethink what a dissertation is? In this presentation, Tim Brace and Terry Kahn of the University of Texas Office of Graduate Studies discuss issues raised by the recently implemented UT Austin requirement that all dissertations be submitted in electronic format. Topics discussed include: (1) will the role of the dissertation in research change with ETDs? (2) will digital formatting change the way dissertations will be read? (3) will digital formatting change the way a doctoral student approaches the writing of the dissertation? (4) how does digital formatting affect the judging of a dissertation's content? (5) how does widespread and easy web access to dissertations affect choices to be made in how the dissertation should be formatted and structured? (6) how does the inclusion of multi-media affect the writing and judging of a dissertation?
