Title

Campus Collaboration: The University of Waterloo Electronic Thesis Project

Description

This paper, a case study, describes the collaboration that occurred as the University of Waterloo Electronic Thesis Project progressed from an information-gathering phase to the implementation of the electronic submission and access option. The paper includes a discussion of the dynamics of the initial collaboration. The original committee consisted of members from the library, the graduate office, the computing department, a faculty member, and two graduate students. The first challenge was to climb a steep learning curve, as members learned the terminology and perspective of each area. While the focus of the paper is on the collaboration on the UW campus, some time is taken to describe the benefits of the contacts made beyond the campus. These contacts include the National Library of Canada, the Toronto York project, TUG partners Guelph and Laurier, and the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. With the implementation of the electronic submission and access option, the project has achieved a degree of stability. Change is a constant however, and further evolution of the project is anticipated. The connections across campus and beyond have placed the University in a good position to support further development of the Project. Collaboration has provided the foundation needed to meet future challenges.
